Look at reddit: People downvote stuff they disagree with. By making dislikes opaque, there may be be less of a mob mentality. Other social platforms (like disqus) have done the same thing prior to YouTube or just don't have the concept of dislikes alltogether. There is no cap in the sense of a threshold of becoming invisible, but YouTube does use ranking algorithms - not too unlike their search ranking algorithms - to determine how far up a particular comment should be displayed.

I've thought about that before, but I really don't like reddit's format and that it's possible to visibly downvote people. Also, it seems that most people focus on long, thoughtful posts about each episode instead of the short thoughts or comments usually found in Disqus communities, probably because their formats are entirely different. Thanks for the suggestion though.

This is a really interesting phenomenon in online communities. The first few votes are the most important, and are what ultimately defines the eventual perception of a discussion. It's important to note that this seems most prevalent in posts that require the reader/viewer to invest time (like text posts or youtube videos). Ideally, feedback of any kind would condition people to behave in ways that end up being positive for the community. However, some really interesting [research at Stanford](https://cs.stanford.edu/people/jure/pubs/disqus-icwsm14.pdf) suggests that when content creators get downvoted, they tend to *downvote* others and actually create *lower* quality content in the future. It turns into a kind of vicious cycle. On an unrelated note, these kinds of conversations are super important to have for the health of the community. There's a new discussion-based subreddit over at /r/RLdiscussion for those interested in questions like these. :)

I don't downvote. http://cs.stanford.edu/people/jure/pubs/disqus-icwsm14.pdf Basically, downvoting is how you get shitposters, and the more you downvote them, the shittier their content gets. It's why /r/politics is a cesspool of a leftist hivemind. And it's why people who arent left of center post worse and worse content. Turns out downvoting turns people into shitposters faster than any other thing you can do.

Downvoting is a core mechanism of Reddit. Voting is part of what makes Reddit Reddit and not just Yet Another Forum Software. If a community sees no need for it or is being negatively affected by it, I think the community is best served by migrating to a platform whose features actually meet their needs. But if the community enjoys the benefits of Reddit and wishes to stay, then voting comes with the territory. I don't believe there are so many downvoting trolls in any sub that the actual subscribers' votes don't tend to negate them over the course of the day. A couple downvotes to start shouldn't immediately be taken by anyone as an insult or discouragement, _especially_ not if the post will drift back into the positives in an hour. Your mods should just make an announcement reminding subscribers that they should upvote good posts in order to help the sub. IMO the announcement should refrain from even mentioning "the trolls" or "the downvoting", since that a) sounds whiny and b) tells trolls that their trolling is successfully hurting your feelings. It is incorrect to say downvoting serves no purpose other than to be a trolling tool. It knocks spam down the listings until mods can get to it. It discourages shitposters from continuing to shitpost. It creates score patterns that can be used to tell at a glance what is appropriate and appreciated in a certain subreddit. The "upvote only" system of sites like Facebook and Disqus are kind of distasteful to me because they only show positive numbers. And since for every shitty post, there's at least one asshole other than the post creator who likes it and will vote it up, that means even shitty posters will see some kind of positive feedback. I can't tell you how much I hate seeing comments that contain, say, horribly racist remarks or blatantly false advice/information get 20 likes on Facebook when I know there are more than 20 people who would downvote it--rightfully--if they were able. I understand your feeling that positive contributors deserve to get positive feedback, and I agree that that's important to promote. But I think it's _every bit_ as important that negative (non)contributors get negative feedback. That's why upvoting needs downvoting.

Hey Rob. I'm a construction worker from Estonia and been listening pretty much all of your Survivor related stuff and much more since One World. I don't really do any social media or comment in places too often. Few years ago I commented after your podcasts bit more often, but it's been a few years now since I last tried to reach out a bit to you and say your stuff is cool. I listen to a lot of different podcasts at work and want to say that you old up totally well and that crew of regulars you've found over time is just really good(all the Joshes and Antonions etc). It's quite funny with podcasters, having some guys you've heard speaking literally thousands of hours, probably more than any of your friends or relatives in RL. Makes you think you really know somebody and subconsciously you start thinking of them like a friend or smth. While it's totally one-sided and the other guy be like 'who are u', bet it would be really awkward meeting guys like this in rl some day cause of that :P About the comment section in RHAP - yeah I've kinda been frustrated a bit more nowadays with it than in past. I think in large part it is that in disqus from what I recall you can't actually downvote posts for real. So if someone makes a very controversial post, the crowd that it attracts very strongly just moves it up and there is nothing the majority can do. Overall I think the general vibe there is very similar to this subreddit though, it's usually the same witch-hunts, same 'uncommon' opinions being common or turn-arounds of public opinion depending on where the editors have been leading us most recently. Btw that Tysons friend Danny you been doing news AF for a while now. Fucking love him, make sure he never goes anywhere!

    > removing the downvote button (yes yes, RES - but it would help) Disqus (as bad as that system is) got rid of down votes a while back and it was the best thing to ever happen to it. A - nobody knows what the hell the down vote button is used for (doesn't contribute to the conversation) as opposed to don't agree with the opinion. Get rid of spoilers period is what I say. There are perfectly good live and post show threads to discuss things in. Just say no talking about this weeks show in the general population until AFTER next weeks show.
